INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ A state transportation official says Indiana is monitoring a series of bridge inspections ordered in the state of Delaware following a scare there that prompted a major bridge's closure.
Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Will Wingfield says INDOT is monitoring Delaware's inspections to determine “if there's anything that applies to Indiana.''
Delaware's transportation secretary ordered immediate inspections of that state's major bridges Thursday, three days after tilting support columns prompted the closure of a bridge that carries 90,000 cars a day.
Wingfield says Indiana inspects every bridge along Hoosier highways every two years, and each bridge's substructure is “a key component'' of those inspections. That includes an examination of each bridge's vertical piers, the soil surrounding them and the bedrock that supports those piers.
