INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Brent Dickson is stepping down from that role but will remain as an associate justice.
Dickson informed other members of the Judicial Nominating Commission on Wednesday he expects to step down sometime before Sept. 1. Dickson chairs the panel.
The commission said it plans to invite the other justices _ Robert Rucker, Steven David, Mark Massa and Loretta Rush _ to meet with it on August 6 about the chief justice vacancy. The session will be open to the public. The commission then will deliberate privately to select the next chief justice for a five-year term.
Dickson succeeded Randall Shepard as chief justice in 2012.
Dickson has served on the court since 1986. He faces mandatory retirement when he turns 75 in 2016.
