LaPorte Drug Treatment Clinic to Open Amid Heroin Overdoses

LAPORTE, Ind. (AP) – A new drug treatment clinic is scheduled to open in early May in LaPorte, where authorities have dealt with heroin overdoses for several years.

The South Bend Tribune  reports Frontline Foundations is remodeling a two-story facility in LaPorte that dates back to the late 1800s. The organization operates faith-based clinics in Valparaiso and Chesterton.

Last year, there were 17 reported deaths from heroin in LaPorte County. The county saw 12 heroin deaths in 2013 and 17 deaths in 2012. The use of naloxone, an opiate over treatment, by authorities has saved some people from overdoses.

Police have also made several heroin-related arrests in recent weeks as they try to stop the flow of drugs from Chicago.
