LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): A 37-year-old Indiana woman has been sentenced to a year in jail for leaving three children unattended in a running, unlocked car at a shopping mall.

The Lafayette Journal and Courier reports Elizabeth Kellerhals also was ordered by Tippecanoe Superior Judge Randy Williams on Friday to serve a year on supervised probation. Kellerhals pleaded guilty last month to one count of neglect of a dependent.

A customer called Lafayette police to the Tippecanoe Mall on January 24th, 2015 after seeing three kids left unattended in a car for about 20 minutes. Kellerhals arrived at her car a short time after police arrived. Police estimate the children had been unattended for about 45 minutes.
