Ground breaks on major Maumee Avenue road project

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): Ground has been broken on a big road project in Fort Wayne.

There is a big curve on Maumee Road near the Indiana Tech campus that is partially responsible for 54 accidents over the past 11 years, according to the city of Fort Wayne.

This year, road crews will straighten the road and remove the curve that lies between Harmar and University Streets.

In addition to straightening the road, lane width will be reduced by a foot, new landscaping will be installed, and there will be brighter street lights. All of that is meant to reduce speed and hopefully reduce accidents along that stretch.

The project will be complete in early August.
