FDA rules certain antibacterial soaps “ineffective”

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): That antibacterial soap you use to wash your hands may not be as helpful as you think.

The Food and Drug Administration has issued a final rule saying that certain products, like certain soaps, can’t be marketed as antiseptics anymore.

The FDA says certain active ingredients used in the products aren’t generally recognized as safe and effective, and are thus misbranded. The FDA says a total of 19 so-called “active ingredients” shouldn’t be marketed as antibacterial.

The rule takes effect Tuesday. Read the full ruling below.
