FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): You know how many people are coming for Thanksgiving dinner, so now the question remains, how big does your turkey have to be to feed everyone?
“About a pound per person,” says Marianne Gravely with the Department of Agriculture’s Meat and Poultry Hotline.
One pound per person is a good rule for a 12 or 15 pound bird, but Gravely says, “when you get to the really large turkeys, like a 20 pound turkey, they actually have a greater yield so you would feed more than 20 people with the larger turkey.”
Also don’t forget to factor in the amount of time it takes to properly thaw your Thanksgiving turkey in the refrigerator, “a day for every five pounds,” says Gravely.
