FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): It was a tragic day for a Fort Wayne pet owner.

A duplex fire on Elizabeth Street Monday morning took the lives of three house cats. The Fort Wayne Fire Department says they were called to the duplex, just east of the St. Mary’s River, a few minutes before 11am.

They found a fire in the front bedroom on the first floor of the building, and quickly put it out, keeping it from spreading to another apartment. None of the occupants were hurt, but the cats died from smoke inhalation.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
