Study: 36% of Allen County families face cost struggles

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): A new United Way study found that a third of working families in Allen County have problems affording their basic needs.

The 2018 ALICE report, which stands for Asset Limited, Income Constrained, Employed, says 14% of Allen County families are living in poverty, while 22% are earning more than the federal poverty level of $24,300, but less than the basic cost of living, according to the Journal Gazette.

That’s a total of 36%.

The study looked at families of four and says such a family needs to earn $53,000 a year to cover the costs of food, health care, housing, and transportation.

Statewide, 39% of families fall within that danger zone. Read the full report here.
