Activist Group Plans To Protest Casino Before Irish Football Game

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (WOWO): A local activist group is organizing a tailgate prior to the Notre Dame vs. Wake Forest game on Saturday.

They say the event is organized to educate fans on the potential negative implications of the proposed Indian casino proposed for South Bend's southwest side. They call themselves “Citizens for a better Michiana”. They believe the proposed casino could lead to students, athletes and fans being drawn into illegal gambling and drug activities.

In a statement sent to our sister station 95-3 MNC, spokesperson Jake Teshka said due to tribal sovereignty, the casino could potentially allow gambling on sports; even those games being played just a few miles away, overruling any laws or ordinances from Notre Dame, the NCAA, the State of Indiana or even the federal government. He also stated that some other tribal casinos across the country have allowed the sale and use of illegal drugs while on casino grounds.”

He wrote that when it comes to a casino, South Bend…should punt.

The tailgate is taking place from noon until 3 in the “K” Lot which is the grassy area near Innovation Park.
