FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): North Side High School has a new nickname.
The nickname going forward will be the “Legends”. That was what the students decided in an online poll earlier this week, beating out Raptors, Night Hawks, and Falcons.
The announcement was made during the final class period Thursday right before the holiday break.
North Side is going forward with the “Legends” nickname because of Fort Wayne Community Schools' desire to distance itself from “Redskins”, which some feel is offensive to Native Americans.
The “Legends” nickname will likely go into effect in the next school year. FWCS spokeswoman Krista Stockman says work will begin immediately on a new logo and mascot.
