Carmel Ordinance Targets Detouring Semitrailers

CARMEL, Ind. (AP) _ The city of Carmel has banned semitrailers from some of its streets after the big rigs began using them to get around a closed section of U.S. 31 north of Indianapolis.

A new ordinance adds weight restrictions to some of its major thoroughfares.

Councilman Rick Sharp tells WISH-TV he recently saw one truck run a red light, another attempting a three-point turn in too tight of an area, and a third that became stuck on a decorative fountain.

Sharp says some truckers have ignored posted detour signs and end up stuck in areas too small for them to maneuver.

WTHR-TV reports the semitrailers also are creating congestion on Carmel roundabouts and tearing them up.

Part of U.S. 31 is closed in Carmel for construction.
