Charges to be Announced in Indy Officer’s Slaying

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): A prosecutor has scheduled a news conference to announce criminal charges in the shooting death of Indianapolis Police Officer Perry Renn

Marion County Prosecutor Terry Curry scheduled the news conference for Wednesday afternoon.

Authorities say Renn died Saturday night in a gun battle with a man armed with an assault rifle.

The gunman, 25-year-old Major Davis Jr., faces a preliminary charge of murder. He also was shot and remains in critical condition after surgery at an Indianapolis hospital.

Renn was awarded the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department's Medal of Bravery twice, in 1999 and in 2003.

He also received a letter of commendation for his efforts during the 2011 Indiana State Fair stage collapse that killed seven people.
