Dismembered Body Found in Missing Man’s Car Trunk

GARY, Ind. (AP) _ Authorities are searching for a northwestern Indiana man charged with murder after a dismembered body was found in the trunk of a car owned by a man to whom he owed money.

Lake County prosecutors filed murder charges Monday against 63-year-old Thomas Smith of Hobart for the death of 48-year-old David Krawczenia of Portage.

The Times of Munster and the Post-Tribune report investigators found the body in Krawczenia's car trunk after it was towed from a Griffith apartment complex on Friday. Court documents say Krawczenia was last seen Nov. 1, the day he was meeting at Smith's auto repair garage in Gary to settle a sizeable debt.

Police say DNA testing is planned to confirm it is Krawczenia's body. Federal marshals are assisting in the search for Smith.
