INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – State veterinary officials say dog owners should consider giving their canines the flu vaccine. 

The Indiana State Board of Animal Health said Tuesday that a large number of canine influenza cases have recently been reported in the Chicago area. 

Canine influenza is a highly contagious disease that spreads easily among dogs. 

Officials say the virus hasn't spread to Indiana, but owners who travel with their pets to infected areas or take them to places where many dogs congregate _ such as dog parks or kennels _ should consider vaccinations.

This virus doesn't affect human health. Normal, healthy dogs will likely become ill but recover. Very old and very young pets are at greatest risk if exposed. Severe cases can result in pneumonia or death.
