Driver in Hospital after Steuben County Crash

STEUBEN COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): The driver of an SUV is currently in the hospital after a crash early Sunday morning.

Around 3:10 a.m., Sunday, officers received a call about a car crash with injuries on Nevada Mills Road at Jimmerson Lake Lane 350.

Once on the scene, they found that the driver of the vehicle failed to negotiate a curb, went off the roadway and hit several trees.

Two people were standing outside the car with visible injuries.  They were identified as 47-year-old Steve Johnston of Fort Wayne and 28-year-old Bret Jeremy Asselin of Fort Wayne.  Both claimed that the driver of the vehicle left the scene. However, after further investigation, K-9 units revealed evidence that Johnston was the operator of the vehicle.

He was taken to the hospital for a head injury and Asselin refused medical treatment, but was placed in custody on an unrelated charge.

The crash remains under investigation and alcohol is believed to be a factor.
