Elkhart Foundation Making Plans for $150M Gift

ELKHART, Ind. (AP) – A northern Indiana county's charitable foundation expects to soon start giving out millions of dollars a year in grants from a late businessman's $150 million donation to his hometown.

Leaders of the Elkhart County Community Foundation said Wednesday they planned to concentrate money from the gift on programs helping children and improving the area's quality of life.

Foundation president Pete McCown tells The Elkhart Truth the group wants to see the county become a more appealing place for companies to locate and grow.

The foundation expects its total grants to jump from $500,000 a couple of years ago to about $4.5 million in the coming year.

The donation came from insurance executive David Gundlach who grew up in Elkhart and died in 2011 in California.
