Explosion Levels Home in Benton County

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP): Authorities say that an explosion leveled a Benton County home may have been touched off by a gas leak.

Fowler Fire Department Assistant Chief Mike Sondgeroth says the explosion occurred just before noon Wednesday. WLFI-TV reports (http://bit.ly/1Oym6Sk ) the owner of the home, Lon Rhanor, was not in the house at the time of the explosion.

Sondgeroth says smoke coming from the home could be seen more than 10 miles away. The explosion set afire surrounding trees. However, none of the nearby homes were damaged by the explosion.

Authorities say firefighters were able to put out the flames within 30 minutes. No injuries were reported.
