Fort Wayne settles excessive force lawsuit

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WOWO): The City of Fort Wayne is paying up to settle an excessive force lawsuit filed against the city’s police department.

Casey Wentzel of Kalamazoo, Michigan, suffered facial and skull fractures while being arrested by Fort Wayne Police in January 2013, according to the Journal Gazette. Court documents say he was in the middle of a “mental health crisis” at the time, and a charge of resisting law enforcement was dismissed just days later.

Wentzel sued. Last week the city agreed to pay him $125,000.

One officer involved in Wentzel’s arrest, James Arnold, was caught on a dashboard camera punching Wentzel in the head and neck. He was suspended for 30 days for “escalating” the situation.
