Gary, Indy Officials Question Takeover of Schools

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Gary and Indianapolis school officials are questioning Indiana's takeover of their schools after revelations that former state schools Superintendent Tony Bennett manipulated the grade of a top Republican donor's charter school.

Gary Community School Corp. Superintendent Cheryl Pruitt tells the Post-Tribune the takeover of Roosevelt Career and Technical Academy should be reversed. Attorney Tracy Coleman said Thursday the school district will investigate ways to regain control of Roosevelt.

The state's decision to take over Roosevelt and four Indianapolis schools last year was based on Bennett's school grading system.

Indianapolis Public Schools board member Michael Brown also is questioning the takeover of Howe and Arlington high schools. He tells The Indianapolis Star the grade calculations for the two schools unfairly incorporated seventh- and eighth-grade ISTEP scores.
