INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The Indiana Supreme Court says the state constitution doesn't require schools to provide transportation for students.
Tuesday's ruling in a case involving Franklin Township schools in Indianapolis could have a sweeping impact on cash-strapped districts across the state.
The district was sued after it eliminated free bus service for the 2011-2012 school year. The move came as the district tried to reduce financial losses after a tax referendum failed.
Long lines of cars formed at schools as angry parents opted to drive their children themselves rather than pay hundreds of dollars to have them ride a bus run by a private contractor.
Lawmakers revised state law after the case to specify that districts “may'' provide transportation but cannot charge fees for doing so unless it's for special events.
