STATEWIDE (WOWO) – The price of a dozen eggs has increased by 50% in the past year.
Egg supplies are dwindling and demand for eggs is rising because farmers are battling a widespread flu outbreak. Hoosiers are weighing in on the struggles they’re facing with it.
“Everything got the flu because everything went up. It’s sad. I don’t see anything going down in the future. Once they get you to pay this price, they got you and they want you to keep paying it,” said one man.
Another man says he used to pay $4 for eggs, but now he pays almost $9. If people aren’t overpaying, they aren’t getting to the store in time.
“Sometimes I go to Trader Joe’s or Costco’s and they’ll be out,” said one woman.
A woman standing next to her said it’s especially difficult because her children love eggs.
“People are still buying it. If you have a kid who’s picky, like mine, you still have to buy it because that’s all they eat. We still need that,” she said.
Other people said they’ve learned not to eat eggs or find alternatives for breakfast.
“I’ll just get a bagel and cream cheese instead,” said one man.
Waffle House says it has placed a temporary charge of 50 cents on each egg ordered. The Georgia-based company says it plans to adjust or remove the surcharge, however, once egg prices come down.
