House Budget Chair Spikes Indiana Medicaid Bill

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ House Ways and Means Chairman Tim Brown is blocking a measure that would force Gov. Mike Pence to expand Medicaid coverage in Indiana.

House Public Health Chairman Ed Clere said Monday that Brown told him the measure won’t get a hearing. Clere has been leading a bipartisan effort to expand coverage under the federal health care law.

The Medicaid proposal would have allowed Gov. Mike Pence to decide how the program was expanded. Pence said he preferred a Senate measure freeing him to do no expansion or possibly pay for an expansion with federal block grants.

Pence has proposed expanding Medicaid using the state’s Healthy Indiana Plan. He has also said he might reject that plan even if the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services approve the state’s application.
