FISHERS, Ind. (AP) _ Hundreds of people have turned out to honor an Indiana aid worker who was killed by Islamic State militants.
Muslim prayers were offered Friday afternoon for Peter Kassig at the Al Huda Foundation mosque in the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers. The service was the first of three planned this weekend to honor Kassig.
Kassig changed his name to Abdul-Rahman Kassig when he converted to Islam in captivity.
Kassig was captured Oct. 1, 2013, while delivering aid in Syria through a relief organization he founded. His parents, Ed and Paula Kassig of Indianapolis, had issued numerous appeals for his release. The White House confirmed his death Sunday.
Services also are planned Saturday at a gathering of the Muslim Alliance of Indiana and Sunday at Butler University in Indianapolis.
