Indiana Abortions Decline for 5th Straight Year

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): State health records show the number of abortions performed in Indiana has declined for a fifth year in a row.

Records recently released by the Indiana State Department of Health show women terminated 8,027 pregnancies in Indiana during 2013. That's nearly 800 fewer and a 9 percent drop from 2012.

The (Munster) Times reports women from at least 84 of Indiana's 92 counties obtained an abortion last year, even though they're available in just six counties. Marion County, home to Indianapolis, had the most at more than 5,000. Lake County in the state's northwest corner ranked second with about 1,200.

Indiana Right to Life President Mike Fichter says the number of abortions performed annually in Indiana has dropped by more than half since 1980.
