Indiana Donation Program Gathers 1,200 Cellphones

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana first lady Karen Pence says she has collected 1,200 cellphones to help victims of domestic violence.

A phone drive that Pence sponsored during October collected no-longer-used cellphones and accessories to be given to victims of domestic violence. Many of the cellphones were donated in drop boxes on the state government campus in downtown Indianapolis.

A program called HopeLine from Verizon refurbishes the donated cellphones and sells some of them for reuse to generate grant money for agencies that assist victims and survivors of domestic violence. Since 2001, HopeLine from Verizon has collected more than 10 million phones nationwide and has donated more than $21 million in cash grants to domestic violence organizations nationwide.
