Indiana Economists Speak out About IU Health Job Cuts

INDIANAPOLIS (WOWO): Two Indiana economists are talking about IU Health's recent announcement that it's cutting jobs. 800 jobs to be more precise. Matt Will is an economist with University of Indianapolis, and he says IU isn't the only hospital making cuts.

“Unfortunately, it's not a surprise, because St. Vincents, of course, made an announcement earlier in the year, and then there have been about a hundred hospitals across the country that have done the same. Just a consequence of the Affordable Care Act. Reimbursements are being cut, and hospitals can go out of business.”

Meanwhile Ball State Economist Mike Hicks says he thinks the cuts are aimed at efficiency and says the healthcare section is growing by more than 2 percent a year and workers should be able to find other jobs.
