INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ Indiana officials have asked developers to bid on creating a $17 million headquarters for the state archives on downtown Indianapolis' American Legion Mall as part of bicentennial celebrations in 2016.
The Indianapolis Business Journal reports the Indiana Department of Administration has asked real estate developers to submit plans for renovating an existing four-story building and erecting an adjacent building to serve as a state-of-the-art storage space.
The existing building was vacated earlier this year by its main occupant, the Indiana office of the American Legion. State Archivist Jim Corridan says state officials have identified the building and adjacent land as the primary option to house the archives now stored in a dilapidate building on the city's east side.
The state has estimated construction costs at $17.3 million.
