Indiana Soldier Killed in Afghanistan

The U.S. military says an Indiana soldier has died in Afghanistan from wounds he suffered when insurgents attacked his unit.

The Department of Defense said Saturday that 26-year-old Sergeant Kyle Osborn of Lafayette died Thursday in Muqer, Afghanistan, after his unit came under attack from small arms fire and rocket propelled grenades. He was assigned to the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry Regiment at Camp Ederle in Vicenza, Italy.

The Journal and Courier reports that Osborn was a 2005 graduate of McCutcheon High School.

Physics teacher Cheryl McLean says Osborn passed over a college wrestling career to join the U.S. Army and calls his death “just a tragic loss.”

She says Osborn was greatly loved at the Lafayette high school and was very close to his parents.
