LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) – A string of fatal shootings at convenience stores and other businesses across Indiana has sparked a debate over whether store clerks should be allowed to carry weapons.

At least four attempted robberies have ended in the deaths of suspects in the past month after clerks fired back.

The shooting surge has left police trying to provide guidance.

West Lafayette Police Chief Jason Dombkowski tells the Journal & Courier  that he doesn’t want people to put themselves in harm’s way. But he says clerks have the right to protect themselves.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown says employees who arm themselves need to make sure they’re following company policy and are trained in how to use the firearm and when it’s appropriate to do so.
