INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indiana voters chose to keep Republicans in control of the Statehouse by electing Mike Pence as governor and preserving a GOP majority in the General Assembly.

But they rejected tea party-backed state Treasurer Richard Mourdock’s bid for the U.S. Senate seat in favor of the moderate voice of Democrat Joe Donnelly.

Donnelly portrayed himself as the candidate best suited to carry on Sen. Richard Lugar’s tradition of bipartisanship during a heated race that drew millions in spending.

Pence is likely to continue many of the policies begun under popular Gov. Mitch Daniels. He’ll have a friendly Legislature, but it was unclear late Tuesday if Republicans would have a House supermajority that would let them do business without Democrats.

The GOP now holds a 7-2 edge in the state’s congressional delegation.
