Donnelly Says Win Still Sinking In

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Democrat Joe Donnelly says his win over Republican Richard Mourdock to claim a U.S. Senate seat the GOP has held for decades still hasn’t sunk in.

The senator-elect started his day Wednesday with breakfast in the Indianapolis suburb of Fishers, where he told reporters his victory over Mourdock had not yet registered with him.

Donnelly defeated Mourdock by about 6 percentage points Tuesday to claim the Senate seat that Republican Sen. Richard Lugar had first won in 1976. Lugar was defeated by the tea party-backed Mourdock in the May primary.

Donnelly says former President Bill Clinton called him on election night to offer his congratulations, but he has not yet spoken to Lugar. He says has big shoes to fill in succeeding Lugar.
