Katherine Legge Tries The Double

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WOWO) — Katherine Legge will become the first woman to try and complete 1,100 miles of racing on the same day later this month when she competes in the Indianapolis 500 and the NASCAR Cup Series Coca-Cola 600 in Charlotte on May 24.

Legge spoke about that during Indy 500 practice Wednesday afternoon in an interview with FOX Pit reporter Georgia Henneberry.

“I don’t think an opportunity like this comes around more than once, so of course I jumped at the opportunity,” said Legge to Henneberry.

Legge said to be able to do both in the same day is kind of crazy, but also awesome. Henneberry asked Legge about how this would affect the logistics she will have to deal with on May 24.

“It’s a problem that’s above my pay grade, luckily, because the logistics of going from the checkered flag here to a golf cart, to a helicopter, to a plane, to a helicopter, to a golf cart, to drivers, introductions, and then getting in the car there. It’s like a military operation, right? You have to have it down to minute by minute,” Legge continued.

She said her biggest worry is getting hungry.

“Because you’re going to be in the car here (in Indy) for, like, three or four hours, then I’m going to be eating on the plane, then I’m going to be in the car at Charlotte for five or six hours. And I eat, like, every couple of hours, because I train a lot and I eat a lot, and so I’m like, what can I put in the car that I can eat during caution or something? That’s my biggest concern,” said Legge.

Six drivers have attempted to run the Indy 500 and Charlotte’s 600 on the same day starting with the late John Andretti in 1994, followed by Davy Jones in 1995, Robby Gordon in 1997, Tony Stewart in 1999, and Kurt Busch in 2014 before Larson attempted it in 2024. Gordon was the most active, attempting to complete both races five times throughout his career.
