Lafayette Pedestrian Bridge Reopening Delayed until October

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (AP) _ Officials say construction troubles will keep a large pedestrian bridge over the Wabash River near Purdue University's campus closed until at least mid-October.

The bridge linking downtown Lafayette and West Lafayette has been closed for the repair project since April. A planned reopening in June for the John T. Myers Pedestrian Bridge was first pushed back to late August after crews found more damage and deterioration than expected.

Lafayette Mayor Tony Roswarski said Thursday the new delay was caused by safety problems with 2,000 feet of railing that was delivered to the job site. He says the railing is being returned to a contractor for repairs and reassembly.

Roswarski says the delay won't mean any additional cost for the project.
