HARTFORD CITY, Ind. (AP) _ An eastern Indiana man is challenging a new state law that bars certain convicted sex offenders from entering schools because it impedes his ability to vote.
The American Civil Liberties Union filed a federal class-action lawsuit Tuesday on behalf of Brian Keith Valenti of Hartford City. It says the law that took effect July 1 prevents sex offenders from voting in person when their polling places are located in schools.
The lawsuit says school children aren't permitted in polling areas unless accompanied by adult voters.
Valenti was convicted of engaging in lewd and lascivious acts with a child under 14 in 1993 in California. He moved to Hartford City last year.
A spokesman for the Attorney General's Office says it will review the lawsuit and respond in court.
