KOSCIUSKO COUNTY, Ind. (WOWO): A man is dead after his vehicle was hit by a train in Kosciusko County Wednesday night.

Mentone Police officers and other emergency crews were called to the railroad crossing near the intersection of State Road 25 and State Road 19 just before 7:30 pm, Wednesday. Once on the scene, the man was pronounced dead by officials with the Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office.

After further investigation, investigators learned that the man’s vehicle had attempted to turn southbound onto State Road 19 when his pickup went off the paved portion of the crossing and became stuck on the train-track rails. The pickup truck was then struck by an eastbound Norfolk Southern freight train.

The Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office will release the name of the victim Thursday after notification of family members has been completed.
