Manhole Inspections Nearly Complete in Downtown Indianapolis

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) – Indianapolis Power and Light is nearly finished inspecting hundreds of manholes located downtown to prepare for the Final Four of the NCAA men's basketball tournament.

The utility company originally planned to inspect about 300 manholes, but decided to bring in out-of-state crews to conduct inspections on more than 1,200 manholes following a series of explosions. Manhole covers were shot into the air two weeks ago in a heavily trafficked section of the city's downtown, with the latest incident happening March 19.

WISH-TV (http://bit.ly/1HWeQPw ) reports the company said Sunday evening that only 34 manholes awaited inspection.

A spokeswoman for Indianapolis Power and Light says the downtown district's regular maintenance budget will pay for the additional inspections.

The Final Four takes place April 4 and 6 at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.
