Mother Charged after School Reports Son’s Absences

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — A northwest Indiana woman has been charged with a felony neglect of a dependent after her son's school reported the fifth-grader had repeatedly missed school with unexcused absences.

The Times of Munster reports 33-year-old Moina Lucious of Portage faces six months to three years in prison if convicted. Authorities say Lucious' son had 19 unexcused absences last school year and was tardy 30 times. The previous year he had 15 unexcused absences and was tardy four times.

Lucious could not be reached for comment because there was no telephone listing for her. Court records did not indicate she had hired an attorney.
