Muncie Couple Gets 7 Years Each for Neglect

MUNCIE, Ind. (AP) _ A judge has sentenced a Muncie couple to seven years in prison for withholding food from their two young daughters.

Forty-one-year-old Jason Scott Doty and 35-year-old Amy Jo Doty were sentenced Wednesday after each pleaded guilty to neglect.

The Star Press reports the couple told police they moved to Branson, Mo., in March 2012 and, after running out of money, they didn't feed their girls, now 2 and 5, for days at a time. They were arrested in June 2012 after taking the girls to a hospital suffering from severe malnourishment.

Both parents apologized for their actions during sentencing.

An aunt now raising the girls, Sandra Whitehead, says malnutrition has left the younger girl with irreversible brain damage and the older girl with other problems.
