INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ The new leader of the Indiana National Guard will be an Army officer who has commanded Guard units during deployments to Iraq and Bosnia.
Gov. Mike Pence announced Thursday that Brig. Gen. Courtney Carr will become the state's adjutant general upon the retirement of Martin Umbarger on May 31 after 11 years in the position.
Carr currently holds a Pentagon position as the Army's deputy director of operations, readiness and mobilization.
He served with the Indiana Guard from 1991 to 2011, during while time he led the 2007 deployment of about 4,500 Guard members to Iraq. Carr also commanded a Guard deployment to Bosnia in 2002.
Pence says Carr's background makes him an unmatched choice to lead the Indiana Guard's some 14,000 members.
