News Conference Scheduled in Gary Officer’s Death

CROWN POINT, Ind. (AP) – Investigators have scheduled a news conference at which they're expected to announce charges in connection with the slaying of a Gary police officer.

Lake County Sheriff John Buncich scheduled the news conference for Thursday afternoon.

Officer Jeffrey Westerfield was found fatally shot in his patrol car on the morning of July 6, which was his 47th birthday. He was a 19-year veteran.

Police arrested an unidentified man that same day and have held him on a warrant from Porter County.

Buncich has offered a $10,000 reward for information leading to a conviction in Westerfield's death.
