Notre Dame Begins Renovation of Iconic Hesburgh Library

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) – The first phase of a major renovation of the main library at the University of Notre Dame has begun.

The South Bend Tribune reports (http://bit.ly/14rx3mE ) the $10 million initial phase will add a north entrance to the 14-story Hesburgh Library, increase natural light and add new technology to support digital research and scholarship.

The first phase also will include renovation on the entire 10th floor.

University Librarian Diane Walker says renovation of the entire library likely will take five to 10 years, and will proceed floor by floor as funds are raised. The library will remain open and in use throughout the project.

The project won't alter the building's iconic mosaic officially called the “Word of Life Mural'' but widely known as “Touchdown Jesus.''
