Off-duty Indianapolis officer charged with attempted murder

INDIANAPOLIS (AP): An Indianapolis police officer has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly shooting a detective investigating a reported domestic violence incident involving the officer and his estranged wife.

Police were granted an arrest warrant Saturday charging 42-year-old Adrian Aurs in Friday night’s shooting.

Police said Aurs’ estranged wife and children were inside their apartment when the detective was shot as he investigated an earlier domestic incident. The detective, who returned fire but did not strike Aurs, was hospitalized in good condition with elbow and back injuries.

Aurs was off-duty when he allegedly shot the detective and fled to Ohio in his personal vehicle. Cincinnati police took him into custody following an hour-long standoff.

Aurs has been suspended without pay, pending termination from the department.
