Officials Warn Ohioans of Unclaimed Funds Scam

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP): State officials are warning Ohioans about an unclaimed funds scam.

The Ohio Department of Commerce says a company is mailing postcards throughout the state asking residents to call and search for unclaimed funds. Callers are then prompted to give their Social Security number and visit the official website for the National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators, which officials say makes the search seem legitimate.

Officials said in a statement Wednesday the postcards are an attempt to trick recipients into providing personal and financial information. They say Ohioans should work with the state's unclaimed funds division to claim lost or forgotten money.

The postcards have appeared in various colors, and officials say the company sending them is not registered with the Department of Commerce.
