One Dead, Several Hurt in Sullivan Apartment Fire

SULLIVAN, Ind. (AP) – One person has died and as many as 11 others have been injured in a fire at a southwestern Indiana apartment building.

Sullivan Fire Chief Rob Robertson said smoke inhalation caused the death of the person killed in the fire Thursday afternoon at Sunrise Towers just north of downtown in the city 80 miles southwest of Indianapolis. The name of the victim was not immediately released.

Sullivan County Emergency Management Agency Director Jim Pirtle tells the Sullivan Daily Times that about 11 people were taken to Sullivan County Community Hospital with injuries resulting primarily resulting from smoke inhalation and shock.

The seven-story building was evacuated, with residents going to a nearby apartment complex and school gymnasiums.

The fire began on the fifth floor. The cause was under investigation.
