INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence says he wants to improve student math proficiency, teacher performance and early childhood education, but isn’t saying how.
Pence released a broad and vague education plan for Indiana on Friday afternoon. His campaign did not immediately answer questions Friday about how he would improve secondary education in Indiana.
Democrat John Gregg has called for a pre-kindergarten education program similar to Wisconsin’s and wants to permanently pay for full-day kindergarten in Indiana. State lawmakers approved temporary funding for full-day kindergarten earlier this year.
Gregg criticized Pence on Friday for not saying how he would improve education.
Pence is likely hesitant because many of the changes he is seeking would alter policies put in place by Gov. Mitch Daniels, Schools Superintendent Tony Bennett and Republican lawmakers.
