GARY, Ind. (AP) — Gary firefighters who've seen half their fleet go in for repairs recently are hoping the situation improves in the next 60 days.



Firefighters had to call in outside help for a June 16 blaze because the department didn't have enough trucks to send and the fire was threatening other buildings.



The Times reports (http://bit.ly/1iN7hQu ) the National Fire Protection Association recommends that a city Gary's size have six engines. Gary has 11, but six have recently been offline for repairs. The department has been forced to rent an engine.



Gary Mayor Karen Freeman-Wilson and Fire Chief Teresa Everett say they're aware of the department's shortages.



Everett says the department hopes to have all its equipment repaired in 30 to 60 days.
