Police: Metal thieves broke N. Ind. travel ban…

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) _ A northern Indiana police department says it only issued one of the threatened $2,500 tickets for violating this week's travel ban _ to a man driving a truck that was hauling stolen metal.

St. Joseph County police say an officer stopped a pickup truck Tuesday morning to see whether its occupants had a good reason for being out during the South Bend area's driving restrictions because of hazardous conditions.

The department says the officer saw that the truck's bed was full of aluminum carts and determined they were stolen from a book store.

The driver and the other two men in the truck were arrested on preliminary charges of theft, while the driver was given a ticket for violating the county's travel ban that was in effect until noon Tuesday.
