INDIANAPOLIS (AP) _ More than 90 Indiana school districts facing transportation funding cuts that threaten their bus service have been given a temporary break by state lawmakers.
Gov. Mike Pence signed a measure into law last week that gives a three-year reprieve to districts expected to lose more than 10 percent of their property tax funds under a protected levy law passed two year ago. That 2012 law takes effect in July and is expected to eventually cost schools some $112 million statewide.
The Journal Gazette reports that the 2012 measure diverts money from school districts' transportation, bus replacement and capital funds to pay off debt.
That law's provisions come as schools are already struggling with funding transportation and capital maintenance funding losses from property tax caps.
