Sen. Coats Calls Democrats “Sheep” Over Iran Deal

WASHINGTON D.C. (WOWO): A weekend celebration in Iran of the country's latest generation of missiles is further enraging opponents of a nuclear deal with Iran.

The short-range ballistic missiles aren't covered by the proposed deal, though they do violate a United Nations resolution. Iran's president unveiled the Conqueror missile at a ceremony marking Iran's Defense Industry Day on Saturday, boasting Iran will continue to buy and sell weapons anywhere it sees fit.

Indiana Senator Dan Coats charges the lifting of sanctions on conventional weapons was an unnecessary concession at the end of negotiations. He's assailed the agreement in increasingly sharp terms over the last month, charging the U-S gave away too much at the bargaining table.

But Coats says he's doubtful opponents can gather the votes in the Senate to override a presidential veto. He accuses Democrats of “falling in line like sheep” to back the president. 12 Democratic senators are still uncommitted. Opponents need four of them to bring a disapproval resolution to the floor, while supporters need just two of the 12 to guarantee the veto will stand.

Indiana's congressional delegation has divided along party lines on the deal, with the exception of Democratic Representative Pete Visclosky, who's been silent.
